South Shore Music 1933-2007

South Shore Music is directed by a voluntary board of individuals who believe that classical music can play a multi-faceted role in enriching lives. To that end several board members and other individuals in the community make our summer series possible through their generous financial support. Recognizing the richness of chamber music when performed in a smaller, more intimate local venue, our sponsors provide opportunities for outstanding artists to share their talents with our community.

These special individuals help us maintain the tradition started in 1933. During the Depression era seventy-four years ago, a group of professional musicians living in and around the south shore areas of Fairfield County, Connecticut, formed a music club to help needy musicians. The founding musicians paid modest fees to featured artists by soliciting annual dues from followers of chamber music. The same supporters offered their homes for the recitals that became so popular a larger performance location was needed. Until 1995, the Pequot Library in Southport was the home where South Shore Music presented performances by musical virtuosi.

Through the generosity of individual sponsors, South Shore Music continues to maintain its purpose of discovering musical virtuosi, presenting chamber music concerts of exceptional quality, and fostering the appreciation, knowledge and playing of classical music to audiences of varying ages.
